I got in my car after shopping on a morning some time back, and VPR was airing an interview with an unnamed actress who's just appeared in a new movie. She said, "This movie won't appeal to cynics." I spent a big chunk of my career on Wall Street, and if that doesn't make you cynical, nothing will. And moreover, doing well there requires an innate skepticism and a constant questioning of conventional wisdom and received truths. And yet ... I value an openness to life and experience, and a fearlessness in confronting them, perhaps above all else, so it seems that there might be a romantic hiding not so far beneath my surface. The movie turned out to be Wild Mountain Thyme. Which I probably won't see, though I like the title. (Or is it Time, something akin to Rocky Mountain Time?--hard to tell spellings on the radio.) Anyway, that title brought to mind some lovely poetry, words to live by, and wonder at their beauty.
I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting. Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought: So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing. Whisper of running streams, and winter lightning. The wild thyme unseen and the wild strawberry, The laughter in the garden
