Embarking On A New Adventure

Hi. Thanks for checking out my profile.

I was thinking this morning about the important quotes that have influenced my life. First on the list has to be Mary Oliver’s poem "The Summer Day":

Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
—Mary Oliver

First, I’d like to say that I make a better impression in person than I do online. I’m kind of biased against online dating profiles. For two reasons. First, I don’t think most people know what they want. Second, I don’t think most people know who they are. That’s because knowing who you are is a long and difficult road, and involves subjects and explorations that are sometimes uncomfortable. Why bother? Most of us would rather not be honest with ourselves. As you can imagine, these biases make me not particularly successful at online dating.

On the one hand, I’d like to meet someone and build a deep friendship and relationship. On the other, I’m protective of my time because there are so many interesting things to do in life other than spend time with people who are kind of going through the motions, sucking in air and living for tomorrow. The wasteland as Joseph Campbell (and T.S. Elliot) would say.

The other thing I don’t like about online dating is it is so hard to tell from profiles what women are actually like. So many of the profiles read the same. “I’m caring and compassionate. I like fine dining, travel to exotic places and walks on the beach.” I’m pretty sure the actual human beings underlying those profiles are more diverse and interesting than their online dating profiles.

So, I’m partial to people who embrace the gift of life, explore their potential, explore some edge in life. Most of my close friends have been people who have pushed their comfort zone in some way, lived on some edge - extreme wilderness adventurers, CEOs of companies, hedge fund managers, ex-Special forces. I’ve worked for someone else a total of four months in my life, and that was when I was sixteen fighting forest fires in the Canadian subarctic. I had a successful career on Wall Street in my twenties, and was a nature writer and artist for twenty-five years. Many of my books are still available on Amazon. Not that my life has been one of constant success. I’ve failed a lot at a lot of different things in a lot of different ways. In different periods of my life I’ve been way into amateur boxing and way into whitewater kayaking.

I've spent the last two years establishing a new business (a Python computer program that analyses public company financial statement trends). After six months of day and night work, I launched the business a month ago and am ready for some downtime, some fun.

I live part time in downtown Burlington, part time in a home deep in the Adirondack woods. I'm into melodic jazz music, coyotes howling at night, great dinners in good restaurants, and close friendships with interesting people. I try to walk for an hour a day in the woods.

I'm at a stage in my life where I'd rather learn something new and interesting than make money, although both are of interest. Mostly though, I love birdsong, owls hooting through the night, reading books that authors have poured their heart and soul into and my dog Fozzie Bear, the best dog in the whole world, bar none.

Fill It

On a Saturday night you will most likely find me reading, watching a movie, having a drink in a bar

I couldn't live without books, music
